A really good informative course that helped me to develop my writing skills, in a variety of ways. I really enjoyed both the fiction and non-fiction parts of the course. I feared the article writing at first, as I'm mainly a fiction writer. But, I must say the course really did help me to break through my fear of writing articles. Since then, I went on to write three review articles which were published into my local newspaper.
This course has really helped me to develop my writing. I would definitely recommend to others.
The perfect course for beginners looking to improve their skills in proofreading and editing. I learned a lot from this course. As well as all of the expected skills, it also covers the differences between America and English spellings, and the correct use of symbols to mark manuscripts for ammendments.
As with a number of the reviews of this course I didn't think that the early exercises were relevant to me. I had written a novel and what did I need advise on writing short stories and factual articles for? How wrong I was. Every module stretched me as a writer and allowed me to hone my skills. I took the course whilst still working full time and found keeping to a schedule a challenge; but my tutor was helpful and fully supportive if I took sometime to send in a module. That said she was no soft touch and quite pertinent in her appraisal of my work and style. I have to face I'm never going to write for women's magazines. All in all an excellent course; but beware you can't cherry pick what your going to do with it.
I was thrown into writing journalistic fact-based articles for magazines and newspapers. The creative side of writing poetry, scripts, short stories or working on a novel were in the second half of the course....which I was told I could not do first. I have no interest in writing factual accounts or embellished melodramatic versions of 'fact' for trashy magazines. The feedback from tutors was unhelpful eg. telling me to add specific details to an article that I did not know and was impossible for a stay at home mum to find out without any kind of journalistic authority. Attempts to focus on the parts of the course that were relevant to my ambition and skills were dismissed. I abandoned this course and did another instead, which has allowed me to make an income writing film and theatre scripts, training courses in communications and a novel. This course was a waste of time and waste of money. It was very disappointing.
Everything I have been taught is relevant for me. I have had numerous pieces published after submitting them to the tutors for marking and guidence. My tutor was a published writer and he had been in the business for a very long time - he really knew what he was talking about! I have been enthused throughout the whole course and the feedback has only ever been constructive.
