Sharek Centre is a London-based, holistic language instruction centre for Arabic language learning, Arabic teacher training and the development of understanding of Arab culture. Build upon the principle of sharing and mutual exchange, Sharek Centre is a hub of Arabic language and culture in the heart of London next to the British museum.
Sharek Centre offers an extensive range of courses, programmes and professional services for learners of all levels that include: Arabic language learning for students, professionals and companies; Arabic teacher training; bespoke curriculum design for Arabic schools, higher institutions and language centres; Arabic localisation services; Arab-inspired arts and cultural events; and an onsite café celebrating Arab flavours and fare.
Understanding the importance of the practical use of language, we provide a comprehensive and immersive method of learning by shared experience. Offering courses and programmes in face-to-face, virtual and mixed contexts, as well as the choice of day, evening or Saturday classes, learners are able to choose the curriculum that best suits their needs and schedules.
As well as hosting events and providing a range of services (translation, interpretation, localisation etc), we are home to an Arabic library, bookshop and a publically accessible café that celebrates Arab cuisine.
Our approach to teaching
Sharek Centre takes a new interactive approach to teaching, which ultimately encourages experience of Arabic language and Arab culture in an immersive and participatory way.
We focus on the practical use of the Arabic language for today’s world. Through our holistic approach to language learning, we integrate communication skills with cultural elements to expose learners to the rich tradition of Arab language and culture.
Sharek’s language courses revolve around shared and complementary learning, putting the learner and the way they experience the Arabic language—in and outside the classroom—at the centre of our process. We also place a lot of emphasis on the practical results of learning; conversation is but a starting point in enjoying the language and understanding the diverse culture from which it originates.
Sharing the diversity of Arab culture
Sharek Centre hosts a variety of weekly cultural events, including lectures, poetry recitals, shows and musical performances, which are open to the general public.
Through our calendar of cultural events, we encourage understanding and complementary learning and development of Arabic language and culture by providing a regular opportunity to meet and exchange shared views and experiences.
In addition to a bookshop, we offer a public-access library that curates a collection of print and digital publications in Arabic.
The exchange of food and drink is at the heart of much of the Arab world as it is the embodiment of hospitality. As such, Sharek Centre’s café is much more than just an F&B outlet. We consider it to be the social and cultural hub for our Arabic learners and customers.
At our café, we invite patrons to relax and partake in open forum discussions and debates about Arabic language, Arab culture, traditions, practises and more through sharing and interacting with Arabic-speaking people of different backgrounds and language proficiencies. The café will also allow learners to meet up with Sharek Centre trainers and teachers onsite to seek advice, discuss projects, request recommendations and ask for help or clarifications when necessary.
Customers can also enjoy Arabic TV programmes, Arabic music and news from the Arab world while indulging in some delicious MENA-inspired food and drink.
