Running throughout weekdays, evenings and weekends, courses are flexible and fit any schedule. A typical class at Fashion Antidote consists of between 4 - 8 students. This enables us to offer hands-on tuition from expert tutors. We offer one to one support to help build confidence and develop your skills to progress from beginners to intermediate and on to advanced levels. All classes are packed with know-how and designed for students to reach a level of excellence in a short space of time which makes them real value for money. This sets us apart from most other fashion schools and sewing cafes. At Fashion Antidote we walk the extra mile and teach you all the tips and tricks of the trade so you come away with the best possible technical and practical understanding of the subject matter.

Our Background

Susan Backhouse is the founder of Fashion Antidote. An acclaimed fashion designer, consultant, retailer and businesswoman, Susan’s collections sold in stores and boutiques around the world. Outlets included Harvey Nicholls and Liberty in London and Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue in the U.S.A. as well as her own unit in London’s Hyper-Hyper. Over the past 30 years she has also worked extensively in education, as a tutor, course manager and Senior University Lecturer, teaching at a number of universities both in London and around the country. Her extensive experience in Education combined with her experience within the Fashion Industry has given Susan the knowledge, skills, inspiration and incentive to set up Fashion Antidote. As well as helping to spread the creative skill of sewing and clothes making for home dress makers, having experienced all levels of the fashion industry Susan wanted to offer an “Antidote” to address the skills gap in the industry, and offer alternative fashion education and a new route to employment.

Our Tutors

Fashion Antidote offers quality tuition from highly experienced tutors from academic or fashion industry backgrounds. Our tutors range from practising designers with their own labels, pattern cutters, seamstresses and illustrators and seasoned lecturers from top colleges and universities in and around London. Our tutors are all experts in their field and we consider them and the level of their skills to be one of our greatest assets. As our class numbers are small each student is able to engage directly with the tutor and receive lots of hands on one to one support and guidance that bigger institutions with larger classes are unable to offer. This gives students the opportunity to gain personal tuition and insider information geared to their own ambitions from an expert who has “been there and done that”.

Student Story

Here’s what our students say about our courses:

"I really enjoyed the class. Being a complete beginner it was good to have a small group so plenty of time from the tutor to dedicate to each of us. The teacher made a fantastic and relaxing atmosphere. I felt comfortable and welcome. I would definitely like to attend other courses”
Irene - Learn to Sew Evening Course

“Just a quick note to say ' thank you' for the great learn to sew weekend. I was very impressed with both the level and style of instruction. However, I also found the course inspiring on a different (non sewing) level, thanks to you for sharing your vision and ideas for your business in a very relaxed and informal way. I have for some time been thinking about starting my own business at some point and it is motivating to see such entrepreneurial spirit in action. No doubt you will see me on another of your courses in the not too distant future particularly as expected, I did order my first ever sewing machine this morning! Thanks again! “
Nancy - Learn to Sew Weekend Course

“I've had the most amazing experience with you! Thank you for inspiring & teaching in the manner that you do. It was most rewarding to spend time with highly skilled enthusiastic lecturers that know the secrets of pattern design, garment construction & tailoring. I sure will miss the guidance. So fantastic to think I've made dresses, designed my ideas, and put action into all of my own creativity. I'm in love with my ability to make my own patterns & clothes. The courses were fantastic, business or personal, it serves such a good scope for anyone that is passionate and driven! I'll be back Fashion Antidote...Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
Lizaan – Professional Garment ConstructionProfessional Pattern Cutting and Fashion Design Courses

“Thank you so very much for a genuinely fantastic and enjoyable time at Fashion Antidote, it has been one of my biggest investments and I am just sorry I didn't do it years ago !!! You are all stars. I got far more than I expected- The teacher was an absolute credit to the company, above and beyond. I have learnt more from these courses than my 4 years in university, dozens of internships and three years as a professional in the industry! :)  The teachers were unbelievably attentive and it was hugely inspiring to be taught by people with so much knowledge and a creative eye. I am massively grateful towards Susan for being so helpful and communicative when providing information and giving me flexibility on doing these courses, I really hope to be back for more courses and will definitely keep in touch. Thank you so much.
