"Learn all about Indian culture and art in London- at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan; choose from classes in more than 22 interesting subject areas!"
The Bhavan is the only place in the UK – and one of only a few places outside India – that teaches and nurtures the understanding of the whole spectrum of traditional Indian arts, culture and heritage in the age-old traditional Indian way. The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is a comprehensive art, cultural and educational movement founded by Dr. K.M. Munshi and inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi which believes that there are elements in all cultures which transcend barriers and knit people together. It is totally apolitical. The Bhavan in London is one of 110 Bhavan centres, and the first – and largest – outside India. Master sitar player Ravi Shankar was a friend and supporter and said “If there is one place in the UK where Indian art and culture is taught and practiced in the true traditional sense, it is without doubt the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan”.
The Bhavan teaches and promotes the enjoyment of traditional Indian arts, culture and heritage. We offer regular weekly classes in more than 22 subjects which include dance (Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Odissi) and Music (Bengali vocal, Hindustani vocal, Karnatic vocal, Flute, Mridangam, Sitar, Tabla, Veena and Kartnatic Violin) from both North and South India, plus Languages, Art and Archaeology. Our teachers are all experts in their field.
Classes are open to all from age 6 upwards, with the vast majority of our students aged between 8 and 25. 79% are of Indian ethnicity, 19% European, and 2% Afro-Caribbean and other.
