First published date May 19 2016 Amended date May 19 2016

So you’ve decided you want to quit your job change your career, but you don’t know where to start? Don’t worry, you’re in the right place! Taking the plunge and starting again may be terrifying, but it can also be the best thing you ever do. So take a deep breath and rest assured we’ve got some courses to help you!

Things to think about before you quit

Although we fully support career changes and adult learning over here at Hotcourses, it’s important to ask yourself some questions before you go and hand your notice in. Firstly, is it the job, or just the company you are working for? If you are changing careers just because you hate Mondays, it might be worth looking for another job in the sector before re-training. What’s more, are you leaving because you feel unfulfilled down to bad management or team work? At some point in your career, you will almost definitely come across a colleague you struggle to work with, however this might not be enough of a reason to change career.

On the other hand, if you feel like you’ve spent years getting regular promotions and pay rises, yet still don’t feel satisfied, it’s never too late to start again! As tempting as it may be, quitting is not always the first step. Instead, take a look at your skill set, work out what makes you unhappy in your current role and work out where you want to go next.

Why might I need a course?

If you’ve been in the same job or sector for many years, being back at the beginning can be difficult. It might not be as easy as just sending a CV to a recruiter or applying for a job on LinkedIn – remember you are competing against people who have years of relevant experience. However, this is, by no means, a reason not to try. It just means you might need a little extra help.

Although a career change might not be as simple as a job search, it’s not something to be scared of. Selling your experience in an interview room and adapting your CV are both important skills to get under your belt, so why not get some professional help? With courses in everything from presentation skills to interview technique, you’ll learn how to sell yourself and maximise your career change success.

What if I don’t have the qualifications I need?

It’s worth noting, although the courses mentioned above are all focused on changing your career, you might need to think a little outside the box. Taking a few short courses or gaining a qualification in the field you are interested in can make all the difference, especially when it comes to relevant experience on your CV.

As you may have noticed, we have plenty of different courses on offer here at Hotcourses! Our best advice? Have a look at your dream job descriptions, work out what you might need some extra experience in and find an evening or online course to give you just that.
