What are basic skills we hear you ask? In simple terms, they are the foundation for further learning or key competences. We agree, this all sounds a little vague, but we basically mean, courses that can help you get a basic understanding of skills you might need in work, such as literacy and numeracy, or in life, such as communication and home management.

If you feel like you are a complete beginner, and need to start with the basics, we are here to help you find the course you are looking for.

What can I expect to learn?

This completely depends on the course you choose, but rest assured whatever you pick you will be equipped with a new found understanding for the subject in question. Here at Hotcourses, we know finding a course can be overwhelming, so have broken the ‘basic skills’ title down into the different course categories to help you find exactly what you are looking for.

Home management – Do you need some help de-cluttering your house? Do you wish you knew more about healthy eating? A home management course focuses on helping you prepare yourself for independent living in your first home.

Literacy – If you have problems reading and writing, a literacy course can help equip you with the skills needed to succeed. These courses will usually involve some sort of spoken and written assessment at the end, especially if there is a qualification involved.

Basic communication skills – If you need practise speaking the English language, or want to learn how to take your conversational English to the next level, this might be a good place to start. Sometimes these will involve some sort of assessment and certificate, but other courses will just be about developing your skills in a relaxed, stress free atmosphere.

Spelling – If your spelling skills really let you down, taking a short course could help you get to the next level in your career. Your tutor will teach you handy tricks to remember how to correctly spell words and use literary rules.

Numeracy – Make numbers work for you with a basic numeracy course. With plenty of options available, you can choose between a course that offers you a recognised qualification, or one that teaches you math skills in more a relaxed way, without the pressure of any tests.

Where can a course take me?

All of the basic courses listed on the site have the power to help you overcome things you currently struggle with. What’s more, some courses may leave you with a qualification that can take you to the next stage of your career, or help you get the job you’ve always dreamed of. Alternatively, a basic skills course may just give you the confidence you need to carry on learning.
