Course description

Women Artists 1800 to 1920:

Artists, patrons and collectors: throughout the centuries, women have played an active role in the making of art. They are, however, lesser-known than their male counterparts. This course will address this difference in an attempt to raise the profile of women artists. We will focus on a period of social and artistic change: 1800 to 1920. This period saw a growing number of independent career women. In the art world, more and more women became professional artists and a number of them were at the forefront of artistic innovation. We will identify and analyse the challenges they had to face, as well as the contributions they have made to early developments of modern art. The artists we will study include Rosa Bonheur, Edmonia Lewis, Berthe Morisot, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Käthe Kollwitz, Sonia Delaunay, Natalya Goncharova, and many others.
