Course description

Wax Carving and Casting for Jewellery: Most jewellery casting today uses a variation on the lost wax method developed in ancient Egypt. This Course will teach you how to model/carve and mould wax. The wax will then be cast into silver using the ‘Lost wax casting process’ During the day you will have a chance to cast silver using ‘Cuttlefish’ and ‘sand casting’. These cast elements could then be used on their own, or be used as an element on another piece of jewellery. (this can be discussed on day) The morning will begin with a practical demonstration of melting, carving welding and stippling of wax. You can carve either a ring, pendant, ear rings or alternatives can be discussed on day. Once finished these, will be taken for the lost wax casting process. In the afternoon you will learn how to melt sterling silver and then cast into either cuttlefish or sand (or both). Each of these techniques will be demonstrated by the tutor usually in a group, before trying out techniques for yourselves. The tutor will be on hand to answer any queries and give guidance and support throughout the day. There are a variety of jewellery courses and levels taught at the RACC so have a look and enhance what you learn on this course.

Additional entry requirements

No prior qualifications required, just an interest in learning a jewellery technique. If you have jewellery experience already and have not tried wax carving or casting, then it’s an ideal course to give you an insight into the possibilities of wax carving and casting in jewellery design and making.

Life Drawing - All Levels
by Neville - October 2017

Started career as cartoonist Eagle Girl Robin and drawing live telling stories BBC/ITV childrens progs. before becoming music entertainment staff producer. So it was with trepidation started once more with Life classes at RACC.very rusty seeing all the faults. however tutor is marvellous very accomodating allowing freedom introducing different approaches showing various artist's style etc. and easy with everyone giving simple help and advice. Continuing and also going to try the Portraiture class. Richmond College is excellent.
