This course will be a fully immersive introduction to using film and to the art of hand printing. We will look at past masters and contemporary photographers working in black and white. We will discuss genres and how to begin to make a body of work. You will have the chance to photograph around East London and immediately return to our unique fully equipped darkroom facilities to process and print your work and see your vision come to life.
Learn the craft of processing black & white film and darkroom printing. This intensive darkroom course takes students from the basic fundamentals of black and white 35mm and medium format film, through to the more advanced techniques for producing exhibition-quality prints. Run in our fully equipped darkrooms, the course will cover printing on resin-coated and fibre-based variable contrast papers, dodging and burning, pre-flashing, and caring for your prints and negatives.
The first day will be spent learning about different processes and the photographers who use them. We will spend time in the darkroom learning a range of experimental processes, pinhole cameras, the cyanotype process and then we will dedicate the rest of the week to processing films and developing darkrooms skills, to produce a series of contact prints, work prints and an exhibition quality print.
If you have always wanted to learn how to shoot, process and print your own black & white film, this is the course for you. Or perhaps you have previous experience of darkroom but would like to refresh your memory and hone your skills. This course is for anyone who would like to make pictures using film and would like to see their vision resulting in beautiful black & white prints. The course is aimed at beginner and intermediate level photographers and anyone wishing to learn a new set of skills.
