The Higher Level Apprenticeship in the Sustainable Built Environment (Level 5) has been developed to allow employees of some of the top built environment organisations to be able to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in the workplace through the NVQ Level 5 Diploma whilst at the same time extending their learning at college through the HND Construction and the Built Environment. Accordingly, this course is designed for students who are already in full-time employment within the construction industry and who are seeking to further their career and gain an industry recognised qualification. Students will be assessed in the college as well as the workplace to ensure all the competencies are met. The range of methods includes portfolio building and direct observation. Students will have regular review meetings with their assessor and employer to support the achievement of the qualification. Students who successfully complete their qualification may progress to study for the award of a vocational honours degree leading towards full membership of professional institutions. The course will also enable students to develop a wide range of employability skills through the emphasis on a vocational approach to teaching; and a focus on a range of technical and managerial knowledge and skills.
Students need Level 3 qualifications (Advanced Apprenticeship) or those with appropriate prior experience of work in the sector. As a consequence the qualification is not suitable for younger (pre 18+) learners. English and maths Apprentices must complete or have completed the English 'transferable skills' qualification and one Mathematical 'transferable skills' qualification to successfully complete their Apprenticeship. These qualifications equate to a GCSE grade C.
