Course description

Portraiture - Intermediate: This painting course is for students with some experience of observational drawing who would like to paint portraits. Working from models, both male and female, you will hone your drawing skills and use them to develop your portrait painting will learn how to enlarge and transfer your drawings onto canvas; using oil paint, you will learn about colour, what colours to use, and how to arrange them on your palette; you will learn how to intermix colours and how to apply them to the canvas. By the end of term you will have begun to develop sound and practical painting and drawing methods. Cousre aims: � You will explore and demonstrate composition, proportions and scale in portraiture. � You will explore a range of styles, approaches and techniques relating to portrait painting and drawing [Tonal, linear, gestural, alla prima, glazing etc...] � You will learn to manipulate oil or acrylic painting in different ways to develop portraits. � You will explore and investigate different artists and their particular approaches to portraiture. This course is built around drawing and painting from the model; observational drawing is at its centre as likeness, essential to portrait painting , comes through observation. Learning to make measured drawings will increase your awareness of proportion. Through linear and tonal drawing you will become more aware of light and shade. Through an understanding of the square and the rectangle you will become more sensitive to composition. You will learn the traditional methods of scaling up and transferring drawings onto larger sheets of paper, board or canvas. Building upon your drawing experience you will start to understand the tonal meaning of primary colours. At the core of your palette will be two sets of primary colours. These will be the warm primaries: Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, French Ultramarine, and the cool primaries: Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Prussian Blue. Greyed-out c

Started career as cartoonist Eagle Girl Robin and drawing live telling stories BBC/ITV childrens progs. before becoming music entertainment staff producer. So it was with trepidation started once more with Life classes at RACC.very rusty seeing all the faults. however tutor is marvellous very accomodating allowing freedom introducing different approaches showing various artist's style etc. and easy with everyone giving simple help and advice. Continuing and also going to try the Portraiture class. Richmond College is excellent.
