This course introduces you to the conceptual and creative aspects of this thriving medium. You will learn how to respond to commissions and prepare for life as a games designer. You can develop digital games through practical projects in areas such as game engine scripting, 2D and 3D animation, 3D environments and coding for web based games.
On this course you will investigate the media industry, looking at the influences of technology and audiences and how media is affected by these factors. You will study the following mandatory units: Pre-production techniques for the creative media industries; Communication skills for creative media production; Research techniques for the creative media industries; Understanding the computer games industry; Creative media production management project; Working to a brief in the creative media industries; Critical approaches to creative media products and Computer game platforms and technologies.
You will also study a number of optional units, which could include: 3D animation; Drawing concept art for computer games; Computer game design; Computer game story development; Human-computer interfaces for computer games; Working freelance in the creative media sector and Object-oriented design for computer games. You will study towards the Level 3 Diploma (90 credits) in your first year, and progress on to the Extended Diploma (180 credits) in your second year.
Alongside your course you will study English and maths and take part in GAP work placements to develop your skills and confidence. After this course, you will be ready to start a career in games design, alternatively you may wish to take your studies to the next level with a BA (Hons) in Media Studies, Computer Animation, Media Production, Film, Digital Television Production or Broadcast Audio Technology at university.
You should have 4 GCSEs (A*-C/9-4) including English Language or a relevant Level 2 qualification. You will also be invited to a Course Introduction Meeting.
