Introduction to Robotics: Robotics Half Term Week:

This course provides an hands-on introduction to the world of robotics. Robots are appearing in all walks of life, from building products in factories, to mowing your lawn. Start out in this fascinating field by building your own robot to take home.

Our robotics half term week brings 3 of our robotics courses into one week of focussed creation and learning. Build a remote-controlled robot powered by a Raspberry Pi computer. Then make the robot drive itself!

This course does not use a "kit" but builds the robot from component parts and direct programming of controllers.

This course is an ideal introduction for those looking to explore robotics for fun or as a career.

Details

Python Programming Essentials

A quick overview of the programming concepts we will need for the course.

Anatomy of a Robot

We will examine a robot like the one you will build to understand the component parts.

Working with the Raspberry Pi

This small, cheap computer will be the brains of the robot. We will turn it on and play with it.

Working with controller boards

We will attach a controller board to the Pi and use Python code to control motors, sensors and lights.

Adding a remote control

Learn how to connect and code a remote control and write more Python code to make the robot respond to user commands.

Building the body

We will take a look at the physical principles, design the robot and assemble it. The robot will be cut from plywood to your design specification.

Coding

We will code the robot to respond to commands, including moving forward, backwards, turning, spinning and stopping. Students will be encouraged to use a computational problem solving approach.

Line following

Attach a line-following sensor and develop some code and algorithms to guide the robot along the line.

Obstacle avoidance

Attach an ultrasonics sensor and develop some code and algorithms to help the robot navigate around the room without human intervention!

Tweaking, testing and optimisation

Make any changes and test the robot.

Competition time!

Compete against other student's robots (and Floella, the house robot) in 3 challenges!

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to

  • Explain the overall workings of a simple remote controlled robot.
  • Explain the mechanisms involved in using light sensors for robot navigation.
  • Explain the mechanisms involved in using ultrasonic sensors for robot navigation.
  • Describe the physical design principles for a wheeled robot.
  • Analyse computational problems using modelling techniques.
  • Breakdown complex computational problems into manageable tasks.
  • Write Python code to implement robotic behaviours.

What next?

Following this course students can develop their robot further in their own time and attend a student support session or one-to-one tuition session for additional assistance.

The weekend intro session about robotics was great. I have built my robot from scratch. I liked the approach that I was learning all stages of robot building. I design it, then we cut it from wood, assembled and then programmed in python. Llewellyn was great and helping me to get over challenges. He has a great wood workshop! So building robot how I designed was no problem. The only minus I can tell is that I haven't won the maze competition with my robot :)

Really enjoyed the weekend course on how to build a robot with the pi zero. The trainer is highly knowledgeable and patient helping you but not telling you the answer! He seemed to welcome lateral thinking and is truly multi-talented himself showing you that coding is only part of the challenge - building the robot was just as fun. Very welcoming. Great snacks and drinks too!
