Course description

History - Church Explorers - Gwinear and St Ives:

This course gives an opportunity to study two of Cornwall's most interesting churches. One rural, one urban with additional north or south chapels of mid-15th century. Meeting at Gwinear Church town TR275JZ, an opportunity to study two of Cornwall's most interesting churches. One rural, one urban with additional north or south chapels of mid-15th century. The economic motivations of their building will be considered.

By the end of the course I should be able to: Understand how closely form and function are linked in medieval churches e.g. aisles for processions also had to house side chapels and pews; Discuss some Reformation changes and how these affected churches; List some of the many ways of dating features in Cornish churches using examples from these two churches as your starting point; Achieve some understanding of architectural chronology and identify features of different periods; Describe the changes brought in by the Georgians and Victorians and how these have affected medieval features and atmosphere.

This course is suitable for beginners and improvers. Curiosity and a willingness to expand observational skills and an interest in exploring medieval churches will help.
