Course description

German literary and intellectual Romanticism:

We will explore how this period of extraordinary transformation in the German territories after Napoleon's defeat gave rise to the Romantic movement. We consider how the breakdown of the old social and political order - coupled with the advent of industrialisation - led to a radical change in the intellectual and emotional atmosphere of the time. We address the work of names as diverse as GWF Hegel, Franz Schubert, Caspar David Friedrich, Karl Marx and Richard Wagner.
