Course description

French - Stage 6+ - Term 3 [REF3989G]: Overview

This course is just for you, if you want to refine your skills and develop further fluency.

What will we cover?

The course content will be discussed at the first session, so that it can be tailored to your needs and interests.

Topics at the higher levels cover a wide range of subjects and may include the following: discussion of news and current affairs; films, plays, books, songs, humour; discovering regions of the world in which the language is spoken and their customs and traditions; learning how to deal with practical aspects of daily life overseas: travelling, working and retiring in the country. Different topics are covered each term.

The subjects covered at Stage 6 and above are similar in range to Stage 5. However, as you progress through the Stages, topics will be discussed in greater depth and you will be expected to express yourself with greater clarity, using complex language accurately.

Sessions are lively and varied, drawing on a range of authentic sources from articles in the press, internet and TV to extend your reading and listening skills. Grammatical structures will be revised according to need.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Stage 6 and above are for speakers with a degree of fluency, spontaneity and accuracy. You will understand authentic material and have the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues, arguing your viewpoint convincingly.

For guidance on choosing the right course, please complete a self-assessment form, which will give an indication of the stage you are at in the language. The self-assessment form is available on the Surrey Adult Learning website or from the Customer Service Team.

New learners are welcome to join Terms 2 & 3 provided they are the right level for the course.

If you have any questions, please ask the Customer Service Team for advice.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Please bring a notepad and pen. A ring-binder for storing handouts is recommended.

Course books, if required, typically cost £15 - £30 and can be used for more than one term / year. This will be discussed at the first session. You may also wish to purchase additional study aids such as CDs, workbooks, dictionaries and grammar books, which are optional.

What can I do when I finish the course?
After progressing through Stages 6, 6+, 7 and 7+, you may wish to join an Advanced Conversation course.
