French - Stage 5+ - Term 1 [EDG1117G]: Overview
Express yourself with confidence, consolidating your existing knowledge to improve your fluency and accuracy on a range of stimulating topics.
What will we cover?
Course content will be discussed at the first session, so that they can be tailored to the needs and interests of the group.
You will have the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues. Topics at the higher levels cover a wide range of subjects and may include the following:
• discussion of news and current affairs;
• films, plays, books, songs, humour;
• discovering regions of the world in which the language is spoken and their customs and traditions;
• learning how to deal with practical aspects of daily life overseas:
• travelling, working and retiring in the country.
Different topics are covered each term.
Sessions are lively and varied and draw on a range of authentic sources from articles in the press, internet and TV to extend your reading and listening skills. Vocabulary, grammar and lexical structures will be addressed in context.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Stage 5 & 5+ are for learners with a good working knowledge of the language, who wish to improve accuracy and the ability to express themselves on a range of topics.
For guidance on choosing the right course, please complete a self-assessment form, which will give an indication of the stage you are at in the language. The self-assessment form is available on the Surrey Adult Learning website or from the Customer Service Team.
New learners are welcome to join Terms 2 & 3 provided they are the right level for the course.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
Please bring a notepad and pen. A ring-binder for storing handouts is recommended.
Course books, if required, typically cost £15 - £30 and can be used for more than one term / year. This will be discussed at the first session. You may also wish to purchase additional study aids such as CDs, workbooks, dictionaries and grammar books, which are optional.
What can I do when I finish the course?
Learners can progress to Stage 6 at some Adult Learning Centres.
We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
