Course description

Foundations for Counselling & Helping Skills-Level 2-Term 2 [EDF1917G]: Overview

Do you use counselling skills in your current role? Perhaps you already work as a carer, nurse, pastoral carer, social worker, customer services representative, assistant, manager, volunteer or psychologist. Whatever your career, many people use counselling skills everyday as part of their primary role. This is because counselling skills use many different types of communication skills that help others create new opportunities and find solutions to their problems through discussion and technique.

This second-level course will help learners further develop counselling skills required for helping other people through difficult times, as well as counselling skills that would progress onto further training in counselling careers as well as complement current or new careers.

What will we cover?

The aims of this course is to teach learners develop communication skills and the self-awareness required for counselling and helping others, as well as the ethical issues surrounding counselling and the kinds of help counsellors offer others.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is designed as the progression route for learners who have completed Level 1 – Foundations for Counselling & Helping Skills, although all learners are welcome. Learners who have some experience already in counselling skills through professional or life experience can enter this course.

This Level 2 community learning course is benchmarked against a Level 2 qualification (equivalent to a GCSE level of learning).

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Learners need to bring 2 different notebooks and pens to class on the first day.

In the first lesson, a textbook is recommended to learners to purchase, however, this is not required to participate in the class.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners who take this course may choose to progress onto Level 3 – Improving Counselling & Helping Skills (potentially scheduled in the 2019/2020 academic year) or other Surrey Adult Learning courses such as Psychology, Positive Psychology, and Mindfulness.

This course would also assist learners seeking an accredited counselling skills programme through vocational or university learning environments. Also, this course would be helpful for those seeking volunteer positions with listening charities.
