Course description

Finance for non-financial managers (You'll be happy or we won't invoice you):

Managers need to understand a wide range of financial information in order to be effective in their roles. You may be expected to communicate financial performance to your team, to contribute to discussions about how to plan and work to a budget and maybe even to present a business case for approval. This course has been designed to give you the skills to do so.

This course is aimed at managers for whom finance is not a key part of their responsibility, who will benefit from understanding it better. If your direct interaction with finance doesn't go beyond budgeting and the occasional business case, but you want to be able to make sense of financial briefings, and interpret company performance and financial drivers better, this is for you.

This interactive one day workshop will demystify the basics of finance by allowing you to engage with them in a way which promotes understanding of the way finance is measured, the documents and statements which communicate it and the business conditions which drive financial decisions.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the role and importance of Finance within organisations
  • Recognise and describe some of the common terms and jargon that are used
  • Identify the elements of the Profit and Loss Account and Balance Sheet
  • Find out about the tools that are used by the external market to judge organisations
  • State the key distinction between profit and cash
  • Recognise how organisations identify the drivers of their financial performance
  • Learn about the key techniques within management accounting and how they are used to forecast performance and support decision-making

The course will also cover the following:

  • What is finance
  • Calculating Profit
  • Cash flow
  • Forecasting
  • Costs and break-even
  • Budgets
  • Business cases
