Course description

Experimental Painting:

A studio-based course on contemporary and interdisciplinary approaches to painting. This is an introduction to the 'expanded field of painting' where you will explore personal projects and experiment with unconventional materials and techniques.

During the course, you will investigate alternative material and conceptual approaches to how paintings are created, displayed, and discussed. Traditional painting materials, compositions, concepts, and techniques will be considered and re-imagined in relation to other forms of making, such as: sculpture, textiles, installation, and media.

You will be supported in your development through material demonstrations, individual tuition, led experiments, group discussion, and guidance on sourcing non-traditional materials. Personal experimentation and the use of sketchbooks will be encouraged for testing ideas and gathering inspiration. Students will have the opportunity to develop self-directed projects in conversation with the tutor, and in relation to set topics.

Suitable for all levels, including beginners.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Create paintings informed by making and conceptual processes found in other mediums
  • Explore alternative approaches to display and composition in painting
  • Extend your knowledge of materials and techniques through experimentation
  • Build confidence initiating, exploring, and developing a project independently.

Additional entry requirements

It is helpful if you come with some painting experience to build upon and an open attitude towards experimentation and discussion.

This course lasts a year and covers everything from flash photography - studio lights and flashlights to outdoor and environmental portraits. For projects you choose your subject. Paul Kemp, who takes the course, is massively supportive and works really hard to make sure everyone gets a lot out of it; and because prospective students are interviewed, the students are approximately the same level. We were lucky to be only six in the class, which did give Paul and us a bit more flexibility. I can't recommend it strongly enough - and if you have a full on job and can't always do much work between classes, Paul understands that but it would be a pity to do the course and not put much into it
