Course description

Day School: The Shakers:

The Shakers created American communities based on the notion of “the gift to be simple”. This visual day school presents the Shakers through their lives, music architecture and art. For over 200 years, the Shakers created American religious communities dedicated to simplicity and perfection. This principle was expressed in how they lived and everything they made, from the smallest sewing box to the cathedral-like glory of the Round Barn. Shaker design has been recognised as American art of the highest order, profound yet simple and eminently practical. In this informal day school we'll explore the Shakers as passionate believers, visionary artisans and remarkable innovators. In the end, Shaker life was their ultimate art form. Everyone welcome. NB: Richard Cupidi grew up in Shaker Country, has lived in various Shaker communities, and curated the Shaker photo-documentary “Simple Gifts”.
