This Extended Diploma in Applied Science is the core qualification studied in the second year of a Level 3 Programme of Study in Applied Science. It is the perfect qualification for students who want to continue their level 3 studies in science following their study of a Foundation Diploma in Applied Science and provides learners with a range of optional pathways to prepare them for progression into University Level Education or employment.
The Analytical and Forensic Science pathway has a reduced amount of physics content and increased amount of chemistry content and some focus on the skills required in forensic science. It provides learners with a greater opportunity to gain the required understanding to progress into fields such as forensic science or chemistry related degrees. In all pathways, a significant amount of time will be spent developing your practical laboratory skills, which will allow you to progress with confidence into technical-based employment or Higher Education science programmes.
While on the second year of the Extended Diploma, you will study the following units regardless of your pathway: Principles and Applications of Science 2; Investigative Project; Contemporary Issues in Science; Genetics and Genetic Engineering and Applications of Organic Chemistry Plus the following optional units based on your chosen pathway: Analytical and Forensic Science - Practical Chemical Analysis and Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis.
Of the 7 Units studied in the second year, 5 are achieved by completing assignments, which are set and marked internally by your tutors. This coursework is assessed against Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria to determine an overall grade for each Unit. One Unit is assessed by means of an externally-set examination. One further Unit is assessed through completion of an externally-set project. After successful completion of the second year, you will be awarded a BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Analytical and Forensic Science), equivalent in size to 3 A-levels.
On completion, you can choose to apply for a University Level course. Alternatively, you could look to enter the science industry in a technical role.
You should have achieved a merit grade or higher on the Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Applied Science.
