Course description

BTEC Extended Diploma in Public Services Level 3:

This course is ideal for those who would like to pursue a career in the emergency services, armed forces or government services, such as the police force, HM Prison Service or British Army. The course will prepare you with the knowledge and physical requirements of the public services.

You will cover units that accumulate 180 credits over 2 years and achieve the equivalent of 3 A-levels at grade A*-E. You will study 5 mandatory units: Government, policies and the public services, Leadership and teamwork in the public services, Citizenship, diversity and the public services, Understanding discipline in the uniformed public services, Fitness Testing and Training for the Uniformed Public Services. You will study 12-15 optional units including: Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle for the Public Services; International Institutions and Human Rights; Understanding the Impact of War, Conflict and Terrorism on Public Services; Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions; Skills for Land-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities; Skills for Water-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities; Crime and its Effects on Society; Planning and Management of Major Incidents; Career Planning for the Public Services; Police Powers in the Public Services; Behaviour in Public Sector Employment; Custodial Care Services; Aspects of the Legal System and Law-making Process; Extended Research in Public Services; Current and Media A- airs in Public Services; Social Welfare Services; Personnel and Human Resources; Security Procedures in the Public Services. The course will give you the knowledge, understanding and skills you need for working in the public services at operative or officer level. You will learn to deal with challenging circumstances. The course combines practical activities with personal research and written work. You will visit emergency service premises and receive presentations from visiting speakers, to give you an insight into a number of public services.

There are no formal exams. You will be assessed to nationally set standards throughout the year through various activities. On completion, you can progress onto an HNC/HND, foundation degree or an honours degree course at university. You are also prepared for employment in the public services. You will have the required skills and be prepared for employment in the uniformed public services.

Additional entry requirements

Students need to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs with the following grades:English and maths at 4 or above, and 3 other GCSE’s grade C or above or a minimum of five GCSEs grade A*-C, including English language, and maths at grade D or above, or a level 2 qualification at overall merit grade, English at level 2 and maths at level 1. Students will have an interview to make sure the course is right for them. They must be of good character and have a good reference and attendance record.

More info: This course is free for students aged 16-18. Those ages 19-23 are eligible to pay a reduced fee. Students who are age 24+ or over will pay the full fee and may be eligible to apply for an Advanced Learning Loan. Students will be required to provide some of their own equipment and purchase some books. A list of these is provided when accepted onto the course. Students are required to cover the printing costs throughout the course.
