This course is for those who are interested in forensics and want to work in an environment similar to CSI. The course focuses on the forensic aspects of biological, chemical and physical sciences alongside complementary units in criminal psychology and criminology. You will develop practical and deductive reasoning skills, as you study aspects of forensic science.
The course includes: fundamentals of science, working in the science industry, criminal investigation procedures, genetics and genetic engineering, forensic fire investigation, forensic photography, statistics for science technicians, criminology, criminal psychology and chemical laboratory techniques.
You will be assessed with coursework and practical assessments. Although there are no final examinations, your theoretical knowledge is sometimes assessed through short tests. On completion, you could go on to study a degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in forensic science, applied science or a related area, such as criminology, psychology or criminal justice studies. You could enter employment as a science technician.
Students should have a minimum of five GCSEs grades A*-C including English and science, and maths at grade D or above, or a level 2 science qualification at overall merit grade, English at level2 and maths at level 1.
