Course description

Art at Ruskin (Watercolour and drawing for beginners and improvers):

This course covers watercolour and drawing for beginners and improvers. Participants should attend the course if they would like to develop their skills in watercolour.

The course will help learners develop their watercolour techniques with step-by-step instruction and demonstrations covering techniques such as washes and wet-into-wet blends as well as developing a knowledge of colour theory.

  • Develop colour theory.
  • Experiment with different watercolour techniques:
  • Reserving the whites
  • Brush control
  • Creating form

Please note: Materials are not included; Students will be required to provide their own materials

Materials list

  • 1 Good medium Round ended brush, size 6-7
  • 1 Good large round brush
  • Paints
  • Preferably tubes, ideal colours are listed, but set colours in a box are fine.
  • Lemon yellow or Winsor Lemon
  • Cadmium yellow pale
  • Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna
  • Crimson Alizarian
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Cobalt blue
  • French Ultramarine
  • Paper
  • Watercolour pad, Weight 140lb/300gsm, “Not “ (also known as Cold pressed)
  • Sketchpad
  • Other basic materials
  • Pencil, 2B
  • Eraser, a soft putty rubber is ideal
  • Masking tape
  • Board or anything that tape will stick to.
  • Couple of water pots
  • Kitchen roll

There are no specific requirements for entry to the course. All painting and drawing abilities are welcome.
