Course description

Advanced Autism Awareness Diploma Course - Practical Interventions and Support: Online course:

The Advanced Autism Awareness Diploma Course - Practical Interventions and Support builds on what was learnt from the Autism Awareness Diploma, though you can study it as a standalone course. From this information-rich resource, you will learn effective therapies, techniques, interventions, and strategies that can improve the wellbeing of autistic children, while providing you with a much greater understanding and insight into the issues surrounding autism.

What You'll Learn from the Advanced Autism Awareness Diploma Course - Practical Interventions and Support

Written and developed by the well-respected authority on autism who authored of our Autism Awareness Course, this course has been crafted to give guidance on effective therapeutic approaches that can make significant and positive differences to the quality of life of people with autism.

You will learn about 24 different therapies and interventions that parents can use, with Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy and ABA covered extensively, along with strategies that can be put in place to help with behavioural issues. You will also learn why children with autism behave as they do, in the hope that it will help you to see things from their perspective and experience an almost first-person viewpoint of how it is to live with autism.

An introduction to autism itself is provided to those taking the Advanced Autism Awareness Diploma as a standalone course. The course also discusses the ideas behind interventions and how to go about choosing the type of therapy that will work best for your child, before explaining several lesser-used (alternative) interventions that you may have not previously considered or may not have been aware.

As previously mentioned, the course offers a comprehensive understanding of 3 particularly effective, and popular, therapies, with a module provided on each. These are:

Occupational Therapy'’ Helps develop a person's ability to function effectively in their environment.
Speech and Language Therapy'’ Aides those who have difficulties with speech, communication, eating, swallowing or drinking.
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) - A specific form of intervention based on Behavioural Psychology that is used with children who have autism, to help them learn new skills and to interact more effectively with the world around them.

In addition to these 3 intervention types, the course also discusses Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and the use of Discrete Trial Training (DTT).

The Advanced Autism Diploma Course looks at the emotional wellbeing of children with autism and some of the holistic psychological interventions that can make a significant difference to your child's wellbeing. These interventions include CBT, Music Therapy, Drama Therapy, Portage, Community Dentistry, and Educational Psychology.

The course also explains challenging behaviour in children with autism, including how this comes about, its effects on the child and their family, why it happens, and holistic ways in which you can help a child through the issues that lead to these behaviours. The course explains some basic behaviour strategies before covering 3 approaches TEACCH, SPELL, and SCERTS, with the aim of improving the lives of both the child and their family.

Who Would Benefit from the Course?

The primary audience for the Advanced Autism Awareness Diploma Course - Practical Interventions and Support, is parents of children with autism, although it will be of great benefit to you if you work with, or would like to work with, ASD children in any capacity (teacher, classroom assistant, carer, etc.). You will learn techniques and strategies that will help you within your role as a parent, educator or carer, as well as gain a detailed insight into autism and how families cope with children on the spectrum.

Perfect for My CPD!

As a Teaching Assistant in a primary school where we have a number of children who are on The Spectrum, this course and the ABA Therapy course have both been amazing for my Continuous Personal Development. I don't think I've ever studied anything that has had such an immediate and profound effect on my work life before. Getting a distinction in both of these courses has really impressed our Headmistress and Governers too which is a bonus! Plus Kate and Steph have been brilliantly supportive (not to mention patient LOL) throughout the entire process.

The first thing I want to portray is that this course is very informing and detailed. The information is professional and practice oriented. It it paired with some useful exercises. The diploma comes with CPD credits. However what disappointed me a lot was the way in which the information is given. It is only via text. So in essence you pay money for a online book which you cannot even download. The next disappointing thing is that the course uses some outdated science which has been disproven. Namely the eye accessing cues. The movements of the eyes are not correlated with memory or construction of a lie.

I am a teaching assistant and decided to take this course, along with the Autism Awareness course, while looking for jobs to help make my CV stand out. The course it's self was so well written, student support brilliant and I really enjoyed myself. And in my interview I was able to talk about the extra things I had learnt and I got the job!
