The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) offers qualifications set at Level 2, as a common starting point for a career in Accounting and Finance. These qualifications allow progression to the Level 3 Advanced Diploma which can be used as a route to professional AAT Bookkeeper status (AATQB). The Level 4 Professional Diploma can be used as a route to professional AAT Accountant status (MAAT).
There are shorter qualifications available on the Level 2 that can be studied individually – Award in Accounting Software and Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping- built up into the Foundation Certificate in Accounting.

- Bookkeeping Transactions (BTRN)
- Bookkeeping Controls (BKCL)
- Elements of Costing (ELCO)
- Work Effectively in Finance (WKAF)
- Using Accounting Software (UACS)
The AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting provides the core accounting knowledge and skills needed to progress either to employment or to further study.
This qualification is suitable for those starting their accounting career, or equally for those who currently work in an entry-level finance role but wish to progress further through the development and formal recognition of their skills.
The first step towards an accounting and finance career, in roles such as accounts assistant, bookkeeper and accounts payable clerk.

Acceptance to this level is dependent on good basic Maths and English Qualifications (preferably GCSE Grade C and above) or appropriate vocational competence as well a successful completion of a telephone or face to face interview with the Course Director. Students who are or have been declared bankrupt or have a criminal conviction may not be eligible to join the AAT - please discuss with the course Director before attempting enrolment
