Overview

Whatever your writing ambitions The Writers Bureau can help you achieve them.

As Britain’s largest specialist writing college we offer you a wide range of home-study courses with expert personal tuition. Whether you want to write full time, part time for an extra income or for a hobby we have a course that will suit your needs.

The Writers Bureau courses include:

  • Comprehensive Creative Writing
  • Freelance Journalism
  • Writing for Children
  • The Art of Writing Poetry
  • Article Writing
  • Non-fiction Writing
  • Fiction Writing
  • Novel and Short Story Writing
  • Write for Profit Using the Internet
  • Proofreading and Copy Editing
  • The Complete Copywriter
  • How to Write for Competitions and Win
  • How to Market your Book
  • Biographies, Memoirs and Family Histories Writing

As well as teaching you how to write and develop your style every course shows you how to sell your work. You learn how to find markets and how to exploit them in the UK and overseas. You are taught how to present your writing; when to send covering letters; how and when to use an agent, and how to deal with editors and publishers so that your writing has the best chance of being published.

Your tutors are successful published writers so they know how to help you improve your work and tailor it for the marketplace. They are selling their own work regularly, so are well placed to show you how to do the same. The effectiveness of this part of your training is proved by the success of our students. They regularly have their writing published – because our methods work.

You can send in your assignments by post or by email. Whichever method you use you will receive a full assessment of your work. Your tutor will advise you on your style, the subject matter, the presentation, grammar or anything else that matters. Through this personal guidance your tutor will encourage you, be objective, but above all give you constructive comment.

You don’t need any special background or education to start. Again and again our students have proved that writers come from all walks of life – housewives, teachers, civil servants, business people, factory workers, senior citizens, teenagers – people who have, under our guidance, developed their writing to a publishable standard.

All our courses are available on a 15-day trial period so you can inspect your course before you commit yourself to it. You can enroll at any time, as there is no fixed enrolment date. And, once you are studying, you have 2 years to complete your assignments. Plus, our dedicated Student Services team ensures that there is always someone on hand to offer help and reassurance.

The Comprehensive Creative Writing course, Freelance Journalism course and the Writing for Children course all come with our unique triple guarantee. This states:

  • If you have not earned your course fees from published writing by the time you complete your course, your fees will be refunded.
  • You have your course on a 15-day trial period.
  • £10 will be refunded if your tutor does not properly correct any assignment.

Points 2 and 3 of this guarantee cover all other courses.

The Writers Bureau aim is simple: to help you become a successful writer.

Student Story

Writers Bureau's Writer of the Year 2016

Rachel Louise Dove

"My ambitions when starting the course were to hone my writing skills, try my hand at other genres and get into the habit of submitting work regularly. I wanted to treat writing as a job, not a hobby.

"My Writers Bureau course helped me to focus on what type of writing I enjoy and discover what I’m not good at and don’t like. I’ve been published in Writing Magazine, Romance Matters Magazine for the RNA and have had fillers published in That’s Life and Take a Break."

Rachel won the 2015 Flirty Fiction competition run jointly by Mills and Boon and Prima Magazine. She received £500 prize money and the chance to work with Mills and Boon on her book. This is due to come out on 21st April 2016.

Not only has Rachel been hard at work on writing a book but she’s also collaborated with other authors for charity. She has written three stories for three anthologies raising almost £2,000.

"My dream really has come true and I’m still pinching myself! I’m also taking the Writing for Children course in order to continue practising my writing and learn more about submitting to different markets."

Rachel hopes to continue writing books and has committed to this by cutting back on her teaching hours. Her main goals are to focus on her writing career and family.
