Student Rebecca Dowman from Muswell Hill shares with us her pleasure in discovering patchwork and quilting.
“The class itself is great fun. Our tutor is patient, enthusiastic and talented and, while setting class-wide projects and very supportive to each of us individually, as we all work at our own pace.
As well as learning quilting techniques, I have really enjoyed working beside the other students and watching their work developing. Everyone has created such diverse and striking pieces – despite most of us having started with no prior quilting experience or, in my case, no sewing skills.
What I have learnt at The Institute has broadened my mind and interests outside of class. I’ve bought a sewing machine and I am working away on my quilt at home; I’ve started noticing and enjoying textiles much more and, just recently, had a great ‘craft day’ quilting with an old friend.
With life being so busy, it is such a joy to have an interest that enables you to go slower, to delight your senses and bring together colours, textures and shapes from different stages of your own life – and the lives of those you love – to make something beautiful. The Institute class has enabled me to do that.”
