Overview

Stanmore College is a friendly, supportive and caring college located in the leafy suburbs of Stanmore. The College has been providing a wide variety of courses (professional, vocational, non-vocational and recreational) to the public for over 30 years and last year alone more than 10,000 people chose to enrol here.

Stanmore College often receives enquiries from people who want to enrol on a course but do not know what it is they want to do or are not sure if the course they have chosen is right for them. Stanmore College therefore provides well-trained and welcoming staff who can give all the information, advice and guidance students may need to help them make the choice that is right for them. The College’s teaching staff aims to make learning fun and give feedback and support to help students achieve their learning potential. By enrolling on one or more of Stanmore College’s courses, students can gain new qualifications, develop new skills and discover new hobbies. This in turn can facilitate a change in career direction, increase personal confidence and give people the opportunity to have fun and make new friends.

What’s on offer:
We believe that our success is down to our great facilities and excellent staff. Our teachers have particular expertise at sixth form level and many also have industrial or business experience which they can pass on in our work related courses. Most of our equipment and facilities are of industry standard and we have invested in a £1.1million Learning Resources Centre opened to students since October 2012.

How to enrol

Young Learners

When you have chosen your programme of study, this is what you need to do:

1. APPLY TO STANMORE COLLEGE
If you attend a Harrow High School, you will be given a special application form which you should complete by the date given by your school. Completed forms will be collected from your school. If you attend a school or college outside Harrow, complete the application form included in this prospectus and send to the College as soon as possible. We will then process the form and contact you to arrange an interview. If you apply for a course where you are unlikely to meet the entry qualifications we will discuss this with you at your interview.

2. ATTEND AN INTERVIEW AT STANMORE COLLEGE
The interview will give you the chance to discuss your choice of course, what we expect from you and what you can expect from us. You will be given a conditional offer for a programme of study which will be designed to provide you with the best opportunity for success, based on our knowledge of your abilities, interests and wishes. Occasionally we are not able to offer a suitable programme.

3. ACCEPT YOUR OFFER
At the interview you will be asked to sign the offer to confirm your acceptance. If you later change your mind we would be grateful if you could let us know as soon as possible. If you have any questions about your offer we are always pleased to talk to you about it at a later date.

4. REVISE FOR YOUR GCSES
We realise that you will be working particularly hard during Year 11 to get as many GCSEs as possible. It may be worth keeping in mind the entry requirements needed to start the programme of study that has been offered to you by the College so that you know what you are aiming for and can start the course of your choice in September.

5. ENROL AT STANMORE COLLEGE
Prior to your GCSE results, you will receive information from us about when and how to enrol. Don’t worry if you have not achieved the results needed to start your course. Come along to the College anyway on the date given to you to enrol and we will make every effort to offer you a place on another appropriate course.

6. ATTEND STANMORE COLLEGE
The college term will start with a short induction which will settle you into our way of working.

Student story

Save £9,000 by studying Game Design & Animation at Stanmore College

Students who study Game Design & Animation at Stanmore College are likely to save £9,000 if they decide to go on further education studies. Recent students who applied for university whilst at the College were told they could proceed into the second year of study because they had already covered the content that would be taught in their first year at university.

The first year of the course at Stanmore College is based on building the student’s knowledge of the game history, hardware, software, observational drawing, 3D modelling techniques and sound design. Students also learn about the process of developing a simple flash game from the research phase to basic scripting, whilst also picking up 2D and 3D animation skills and motion capture. This would all be equivalent to the first year of a Game Design course at university.

The second year of the course at College is focused building upon the skills that students gained during their first year and developing them further in order to create content for a portfolio. The portfolio can be used to showcase the students work when they go for interviews for employment and/or university. The second year also covers design of creative user interfaces for videogames, writing a game design document and creating 3D game maps using an Unreal Development kit, which is equivalent to the second year of a Game Design course at university.

University fees have risen to £9,000 per year from September 2012 for students looking to study in further education. A saving of £9,000 would be substantial and the course at Stanmore College provides just that. Students have gone on to leading universities such as Norwich, Sussex and Amersham who provide a Game Design course with similar course content to that taught at Stanmore. One student was told that the first and second year of study at university would be irrelevant and that they could start their university education at third year because their portfolio showed advanced learning, as a result of the course at Stanmore College.

Stanmore College offers students the opportunity to study Game Design & Animation as a vocational course for two years, which is equivalent to 3 A Levels. For more information on courses available at the College, please contact Admissions on 0208 420 7700.

Examples of what alumni students had to say about the course:

Morgan Baxter: ‘I think we were privileged to have such knowledge of the industry from such an early age. I want to say what a great job my lecturer did on the games course; my university tutor is very impressed with my knowledge, you're running a very up and coming successful course!’

Gehendra Sunwar: ‘Thanks for the excellent teaching at Stanmore College, I wouldn't have made it if it weren't for all your support, faith, counselling when I myself had lost hope’.

Akash Krishnan: ‘The teachers at Stanmore College are like saints, I am really ahead of the game at university!’
