Learners' stories

All of our learners achieve some personal or professional goal during their time with us - read a few of their stories here...

Kim

Kim had been out of work for nearly a year when she started the ITQ Level 2 course at Redbridge Institute. She also joined the Institute’s Get Redbridge Working (GRW) project, which provided her with one-to-one employability support from an adviser, as well as Confidence building and Interview skills workshops.

Kim had previous experience as a secretary but felt she needed to brush up her skills and gain an IT qualification in order to rebuild her confidence and her career. Her GRW adviser suggested a work placement to boost her confidence and to enhance her CV.

Redbridge Institute found Kim a part-time work placement with The Welcome Centre, a charity in Ilford offering a range of services to the homeless. The placement was initially for six weeks and it involved inputting client information into a computer database. Kim enjoyed the work so much that she ended up staying with The Welcome Centre for seven months!

Shortly after the end of her placement Kim started a full-time job as a team secretary with a firm of estate agents in Edmonton.

She said

"Without a doubt attending the course and workshops at Redbridge Institute changed my life for the better. I have to use Excel and PowerPoint in my new job and so would never have applied for it if I hadn’t done the ITQ 2 course. The work placement also helped me to gain confidence."

"Redbridge Institute changed my life for the better. After being unemployed for 18 months, I am now working full time as a secretary."

Carolyn

Volunteering in her children’s school and gaining qualifications both played a part in helping Carolyn secure a job as a teaching assistant.

Carolyn gave up full-time work when she had her first child 10 years ago. However, when her daughter started at Whitebridge Junior School in Loughton she began doing voluntary work for the PTA as well as going into the classroom once a week to help children with their reading.

She said

"I loved all the voluntary work in the school. Eventually, I became Secretary of the PTA, which involved fundraising and organising events. I also progressed to helping out in the classroom two days a week. I decided that when I returned to paid work that I would like to be a teaching assistant. However, I could see that schools were increasingly looking to take on people with qualifications so I enrolled on Redbridge Institute’s Level 2 Teaching Assistant course."

Having gained the Level 2 qualification, Carolyn joined the Level 3 TA course the following year. Shortly afterwards, the school approached Carolyn about taking on a part-time paid post. She added

"They know how I work and knew I was doing the Level 3 qualification."

Carolyn is now working three days a week providing one-to-one support for a child with autism.
