Overview

Montessori Centre International (MCI) is Europe's largest Montessori Teacher training college. It provides training for those who wish to work in childcare and early years' education. At the core of its training programme is the Montessori system of education - a child-centred approach which is used all over the world.

The College aims to provide students with the knowledge, experience, practical training and qualifications they need to follow a career in childcare. The selection of full, part-time and distance learning courses that are offered, lead to internationally-recognised Montessori diplomas.

Dr Maria Montessori (1870 to 1952) was an innovator of classroom practice and ideas, which have had a profound influence on the education of young children. She pioneered a method of education which combines a philosophy of freedom and self-development for children with a practical approach.

She believed that all children want to learn and can absorb knowledge without effort if they are given the right kind of activities at the right time of their development by properly trained teachers.

Montessori Centre lnternational, London welcomes students of all ages, from 18 years upwards and offers a library, a student common room with IT and internet access as well as an outside eating area.

Subject Strengths

Montessori Centre International is a vibrant learning community of students from all over the world who come to learn about the Montessori approach and what it offers young children. We embrace the legacy of Maria Montessori whilst ensuring that our students’ learning combines the universal needs of children with current research.

In establishing Montessori Centre International (MCI) in 1998 we have drawn on the expertise of the Montessori St Nicholas Training Centre (MSN) – founded in 1946 under the guidance of Dr Montessori – and of the London Montessori Centre (LMC), which has operated from our current central London premises since 1970.

We continue to learn from the wisdom of the founders of MSN who pioneered the first Montessori distance learning programme and established an international reputation for the training centre.

The founder of LMC added her forward-looking ideas to the Montessori training by introducing theories of child development and contemporary view of the child.

Their leadership is echoed in MCI’s on-going commitment to lead our graduates toward reflective practice which respects, trusts and values the child as the herald of the future. We invite you to come and learn with us.

Student Story

Brekke Friend
Diploma in Montessori Pedagogy - Birth to Seven (Early Years Educator) Part-time Student

"My name is Brekke.  I am a Londoner and discovered MCI when I researched teacher training courses to get into early years education.  It was a career change as I had been working in retail for over 4 years mainly in the Toys department of a busy London department store.  I had prior experience assisting 4-6 year olds tap, dance and drama classes and public performances for my local dance centre.  I am passionate about the world of art and contemporary craft and studied at Central Saint Martins and the University of Brighton.  I have had various teaching assistant experience over the years providing art classes for children and adults with physical and learning disabilities.

In 2014, my nephew was born and I felt that final push to retrain.  As a dyslexic and someone with strong artistic interests, the freedom and respectful attitudes Maria Montessori fostered in terms of celebrating the individual child’s own learning journey is something that inspired me.  She considered every child as an individual learner, a sentiment I strongly support, and found missing in some of my main stream schooling experiences.  It is my ambition to become an empathetic and responsive early years practitioner who holds Montessori key principles ever in mind.

This is an intense course and a transformative, heartfelt learning process.  The community feeling both online through the forums and the camaraderie between peers at college, together with the varied perspectives and infectious enthusiasm from the experienced tutors on hand has been what’s made this course so special.”
