  • Mary Ward Centre Overview Image

"Friendly, Adult Education Centre in the heart of London. From Yoga to Excel, enjoy a wide range of affordable part-time courses at times to suit you!"

Overview

The Mary Ward Centre is a specialist adult education college offering part-time courses of study in the daytime, evenings and at weekends in subjects that have relevance for work, personal growth or just for fun.

The Centre was named after Mary Ward, a dynamic late Victorian who acquired fame and riches through her bestselling novels. She founded the Mary Ward Settlement with the aim of providing cultural and educational opportunities to those denied them through circumstances of birth. She was instrumental in setting up Somerville College, the first women’s college at Oxford and also introduced the first school for disabled children and the playcentre movement to England.

Every year 7,000 Londoners choose to study at the Mary Ward Centre. The courses available are at all levels from introductory to challenging and are taught by experienced tutors. Day, evening and weekend options of varying length help ensure a time convenient for any schedule.

 What's on offer
Courses encompass subjects ranging from art to anatomy, photoshop to film studies, and painting to project management. Many courses have certificates at the end yet there are also opportunities to acquire skills and knowledge and personal insight purely for fun.

Our courses are the best option to fit your lifestyle. You can choose from a course lasting for two days to one lasting much longer, to develop your skills and knowledge. You can gain professional qualifications in alternative therapies, counselling, childcare and crèchework, community interpreting and translation.

The Centre also offers an Access to Higher Education course in art. We also have a programme of courses aimed at older learners which exercise the mind and creativity as well as the body.

Equality & Diversity

At the Mary Ward Centre, equality and diversity is central to the creation of a fair organisation where everybody can take part and fulfil their potential free from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. It is about advancing equality of opportunity to all. Diversity is about respecting, valuing and celebrating all people as individuals. It is also about fostering good relations among diverse groups of people. At the Mary Ward Centre, equality and diversity has a long history, dating from our foundation by Mrs Humphrey Ward (Mary Ward), and her idea of “equalisation”. For more info

Student story

Paul popped into the Mary Ward Café for a coffee 18 months ago, picking up the prospectus on his way out. Little did he know that this year he would be one of nine artists contributing in an exhibition in Shoreditch as part of the completion of the Advanced Practice Art and Design course. Paul considers The Mary Ward to have been a lifeline giving him the confidence to move forward.

He says of Mary Ward ‘I am very fond of the place, I like the whole way it is set up, to give people a chance. The tutor Lara was very sensitive with her teaching; with always something valuable to say…All the staff have been fantastic…”
