Inclusive Learning Support
Havering Adult College is committed to providing all learners with a wide range of high quality courses to help enhance their prospects, aspirations, health and wellbeing. Courses are held in various venues throughout the community to ease access to our services.
Our Inclusive Learning policy outlines the steps we take to ensure that we offer an inclusive learning environment for all our learners. Our aim is to offer appropriate support and assistance as and when necessary for learners with disabilities or other health issues.
When you complete your learning agreement you will be asked if you have a disability, health or any other learning needs that we should be aware of. By making this declaration we will be aware of your needs and a staff member from inclusive learning will contact you to identify what support you require and how we can assist you. We will also enquire if we can notify the teacher, on your behalf, to ensure your learning needs are met from the beginning of the course.
Support with Examinations
In some cases we may be able to apply to the awarding body with a view to obtaining reasonable adjustments to assist. This is at the awarding body's discretion and not a Havering Adult College decision. The awarding body will require proof of your condition to enable them to make the decision. This should be provided to us at the start of your course. Havering Adult College has a duty under the Equality Act 2010 to ensure that inclusive learning takes place.
There are a variety of ways we can assist you to meet yout learning goals. This could include help with:
We can support learners financially if they meet certain criteria. To apply for funding, please request the email address of Brenda Hunt. The funding we have available is below:
For adults who have declared a disability or learning difficulty. This is used to provide resources or individual support.
Discretionary Learner Support (DLS)
This funding can be used to support travel costs and childcare. It cannot be used for resources for any fully funded learner.
For learners studying level 3 and level 4 who have taken out a loan, there is the facility for support to be put in place using these monies.

Suzie - Academic Year 2013-2014:
"I would like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone at the College who has made it possible to do the courses and complete them. I thoroughly enjoyed my courses and will continue to do more and carry on learning at Bower Park.
With your help I have found the confidence to gain employment in a beauty salon, where I am able to be left on my own to do treatments with confidence.
I am proud to say I am a qualified nail technician and beautician, thanks to everyone at Bower Park especially Kerri, Toni and Alex.
I look forward to doing more courses. See you soon."
Lesley - Academic Year 2013-2014:
"My name is Lesley and I have found coming to college has helped me a lot. It has given me confidence with my maths and allowed me to help my children with their homework. It has given me a lot of confidence working with others, and to get up and solve problems on the board in front of the class."
Lesley is currently studying Maths at Level 1 and has completed her first portfolio.
Sarina - Academic Year 2013-2014:
"I've completed English and have now moved on to maths. I can see that I am understanding maths better and can now help my son with his school work"
Sarina has been attending college for 3 years, has achieved L2 English and is currently studying L1 Maths.
Sandra - Academic Year 2013-14:
"I am now living in Dorset with my partner and working for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in the Legacy Department as a Legacy Administration.
My new confidence and improved IT skills have been really beneficial. I believe that if I had not done this course I wouldn't be working at RNLI."
Laura - Academic Year 2012-2013:
"Before starting my city and guilds courses in cake decorating at Havering Adult College, I had never decorated a cake. This was less than 2 years ago. Now i plan to begin my own business in cake decorating, after building up a portfolio and designing a website.
The course I found to be very helpful, and the teacher was brilliant - going out of her way to accommodate all of our needs and requests. We learnt various different icing techniques, covering many different types of icing including sugar paste, royal icing and flower paste. Although I had never touched any of these mediums before, I can now do fairly intricate work, and would definitely look into doing a further course in this area."
