Student story

'I made some really good friends on the floristry course and I now have a part-time job in a florist. I feel like a whole new person'.
-Joanne Leech from Lewisham studied floristry.

'I love coming to class each week, it is really enjoyable. The course has given me a lot of confidence and has opened a lot of doors for me'.
-Pamela Goodyer from Honor Oak studied Literacy.

‘I hadn’t realised I could study Stained Glass so easily’
-Angela Scott, from Forest Hill, studied Stained Glass

''I have studied stained glass now for three years. I always liked it – when I was young my mother used to take me to look at stained glass in churches and it’s something I’ve always appreciated. I hadn’t realised I could study it so easily until I saw a CEL prospectus. I was a bit nervous at first as I’ve never liked handling glass – it puts my teeth on edge! – so the first course I did was a 10-week taster course. I got over my glass phobia quite quickly, and I managed to complete a stained glass panel.

Making stained glass is quite involved. First you have to come up with a design, then choose your glass and cut it to the shape you want. You solder lead to hold the glass in place, then force cement in between the lead and the glass to fix it. Finally, you blacken the lead. It’s like creating a jigsaw. I’ve made a few lead light panels for windows and have repaired leaded glass in friends’ houses.

I enjoy the workshops – it’s a very creative atmosphere. Some of us are beginners, some are more experienced and getting on with our own projects.''

Angela has been accepted onto a Post Graduate Certificate in Glass and Architecture at  Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
