Tim Potter attended War and Peace: Life for Ordinary Londoners in World War I in September 2014
After retiring from a career in education I wanted to indulge my first love of history. I enrolled on a short course at Bishopsgate Institute looking at the history of London during the First World War. I loved every minute of it! Handling the original materials kept in Bishopsgate Library brought the period alive. You felt immersed in the direct experience of Londoners of 100 years ago. The other students were interested, friendly and stimulating; the lecturer was inspirational; the materials were fascinating.
I learnt a lot and feel inspired to learn more. I'm toying with the idea of trying to set up a group of strictly amateur historians to work together on some of the themes Bishopsgate Institute specialises in. It was only a short course but they so often have the potential to change lives!
War and Peace: Life for Ordinary Londoners in World War I was part of our London courses and is just one of the many courses for adults available at Bishopsgate Institute.
