A membership body, the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) accredits and registers psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors in the UK.  The Council has more than 7,000 therapists and counsellors in practice listed and more than 75 training centres. Registered counsellors must go through an intensive postgraduate training in order to work with patients with mental illnesses. The UK Council for Psychotherapy awards the European Certificate of Psychotherapy (ECP) and trains psychotherapists to be qualified to practice in the region of Europe.
