Six Form Student Story: Higher Tier GCSEs

Studying GCSEs to get into Sixth Form College

First published date July 13 2011 Amended date November 08 2013

Name: Rachel Afriyie
Options: Art, Business Studies, German, Drama
Level: Higher Tier GCSE
School: Twyford C of E High School

Q. Why did you pick these options?
There are many different reasons for me choosing the above options. I picked Art because I am a very creative person and for my future career I aspire to be a successful designer; these qualifications will help me along the way. I picked Business Studies because it again links to my future career aspirations. I picked German because I enjoy speaking other languages and excelled with it at KS3 levels. I picked Drama because since I was a child it has always been my favourite subject!

Q. Why did you choose London as a study destination?
I chose to stay in London because I have lived here my whole life and the school I was at offers good GCSE options

Q. How are you finding your studies?
Some are proven to be easier than I thought e.g. German, but others such as Art are quite massively harder because you are given a lot of work to do in a short space of time and A* Grades are quite hard to achieve.

Q. What are the biggest challenges that you have faced so far?
The biggest challenges I have faced so far are getting all my work in on time and having to remember the things I have studied so I can write them out in my controlled coursework.

Q. What is the best thing about your choices?
The best thing about my choices is that they are all quite different so although they complement each other, I have a wide variety of area’s covered.

Q. What are you planning to do after your GCSE’s?
After my GCSE’S I plan to stay on to sixth form and do my A levels & AS levels. I then plan to try and get a degree at a top university in Graphic Design or maybe another field of study if I change my mind as I get older.

Q. What advice would you give to new students based on your experience?
I would advise them to be careful about the subjects they chose, and to make sure that they pick them because they like them, not because they think they’ll be easier or because they can’t be bothered. Time should be spent deciding so that in the future, time won’t be wasted in regret.
