Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you will remember that Kim Kardashian shoot that 'broke the internet'. The queen of contouring, every girl in the world wants to master the makeup tricks that gives us that Kim Kardashian glow. Enter Mario Dedivanovic, Kim K’s trusted makeup artist. Specialising in subtle transformations, he has worked with the likes of Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez. With this in mind, you can imagine our excitement when our lovely office manager Sandra told us she was off to meet the man himself, and take part in a makeup master class with him. We caught up with Sandra to discover some of the secrets of Mario’s makeup bag.
To say I love makeup is an understatement; a hobby of mine as well as part-time occupation, I’ve attended a couple of makeup courses in the past and spent hours watching tutorial videos on YouTube and Instagram. Mario Dedivanovic is one of the artists I follow and I’ve been trying to learn his amazing contour techniques for ages. It is here I first found out about his master class in London. Excited by such an amazing prospect, I booked on straight away, knowing it would be a great opportunity for me to learn his application and long wear techniques.
Learning makeup like a pro - from a pro
I arrived early on a Saturday and met my fellow students, who were all as excited as I was to learn the tricks of the trade. We all had brunch together before the class started, which was a nice opportunity to mix and mingle. I managed to chat with a few people and discovered that one of the ladies was from Abu Dhabi, in London on holiday and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to attend the training session with Mario. We all sat in one of the auditoriums at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and waited for the man himself to arrive. A big screen was set up, which meant we could all see the model’s face clearly, allowing us to watch and follow every step.
How to apply foundation - lessons from the legend
Mario had a very warm and gracious calm about him. We had an interactive session and could ask questions at any given stage. He started by teaching us a new setting routine that allows you to layer makeup, without caking it all on. As a personal preference, he doesn’t begin with a primer but prefers to start by moisturising the skin, then applying the foundation and blending it in with a damp beauty blender, pressing the makeup onto the skin. He then focuses on the eye and brow makeup, before applying concealer below the eyes and cheek bones to eliminate any fallout from the eye makeup. Mario taught us how to set the entire face with translucent powder, then apply bronzer and define facial features like the cheek bones and shaving the nose to look slimmer.
Despite being a lot of information to take on, I feel confident I could practise some of these techniques on my own at home. I have already begun testing out my new skills on some of my friends, although I might need to stock up on some more of Mario’s makeup bag essentials. His go-to product for that red carpet ready look was Filmstar Bronze and Glow by Charlotte Tilbury, which is now on my shopping list!
Perfecting those finishing touches
I was thrilled to leave my course with a new passion for makeup and a beautiful gift hamper full of amazing beauty products, perfume and Harrods gift vouchers. My only complaint is I wish it hadn’t gone so quick and that I had known it would be such a great opportunity to network and meet others interested in going on more makeup courses!
