How to get into acting

First published date March 08 2013 Amended date August 28 2015

Many people take acting courses to start their performing career. Although acting may seem like an exciting and glamorous job full of premieres and photo shoots, there is a lot of hard work and time that needs to be put in before you reach the fame of actors like George Clooney, Jennifer Aniston and Johnny Depp and an acting course could be just the start.

Taking to the stage or the screen

Knowing how to get into acting can be difficult. Becoming an actor doesn’t necessarily mean starring in films or on the television. The theatre is home to some of the most talented actors and actresses in the business, whether they are acting in plays or musicals. Every actor wants their ‘break’, and wants to land their dream role, whether it is starring in a Hollywood blockbuster or treading the boards in the theatre, acting in a Shakespearian play.  The first thing when you choose to find out how to get into acting is deciding between stage and screen. Some actors are able to do both, but it is a good idea to focus your training on one discipline.

Choosing a course

If you are hoping to get into acting by studying at university, there are a huge range of acting and drama courses at undergraduate level. If you decide to focus on the more general area of acting in the theatre, there are several institutions around the UK that offer performing arts courses.

The long road to stardom

An acting career won’t happen overnight. Be prepared to work other jobs in your spare time, and you may find your first acting jobs won’t involve much (if any!) pay. Get as much experience whilst you are training as you can. Get involved with local drama groups, whether helping out or taking part. Remember that every actor started out like you did, training and working side jobs to earn money.

After your course

Auditions! Auditions are an actor’s job interview. In the same way that people might go on several interviews before landing a position, actors will often find that they have to go on a lot of auditions before landing a part. Taking an audition course is a great way to boost your confidence and help you with your technique so you can wow everyone at your next audition.

Getting an agent is a great way to help your career. Agents will be able to put you forward to audition for roles that they think would suit you. Agents will have lots of contacts in the industry and so will be able to introduce you to all sorts of people in the business, including casting directors and producers. The more courses you take, the more drama groups you join, the more chances you will have of being spotted by an agent.

Hard work and dedication

Making the decision to become an actor is accepting that you will have a lot of hard work in front of you and so you must be sure you are totally dedicated to your craft. Plenty of training is a good way for you to meet people in the industry and you will often be taught by people who have first hand experience of the acting industry.
