Seven people you might not expect to be fellow online learners

Celebs who studied online

First published date March 10 2016 Amended date March 10 2016

In the online classroom, your classmates are often anonymous. Here are seven of our favourite celebs who logged in to learn...

Steven Spielberg – One of the world’s most famous screenwriters, directors and producers, Spielberg has won over 120 awards and has created an anthology of classics, including E.T, Jaws and Jurassic Park. If this wasn’t enough, Mr Spielberg has been knighted in England, France and Italy. After dropping out of his studies at California State University Long Beach to concentrate on making films (a wise move in retrospect), Spielberg decided to return to school as a distance learning student, graduating with a BA in Film Production and Electronic Arts in 2002.

Arnold Schwalzenegger – Where do we begin? The Austrian-American actor, professional bodybuilder, businessman and politician is famous for just about everything. A man of many talents, Schwalzenegger earned his BA in Business and International Economics in 1979 via distance learning from the University of Wisconsin.

James Franco – The Hollywood heart throb who stars in 127 Hours; Eat, Pray, Love; Milk and Spiderman to name a few, used distance learning courses to help him complete his bachelor’s and master’s degree. What is it they say about brains and beauty again?

Hilary Duff – Despite recently falling off the radar, this Disney darling was the child star of Lizzie McGuire, Cheaper by the Dozen and A Cinderella Story. In the midst of her success, Hilary enrolled at Harvard University’s extension school, studying an online course from Boston whilst living in LA.

Joan Armatrading – The three times Grammy nominated British singer songwriter gained her BA in History by completing an online course.

Lenny Henry – The much-loved comedian, actor and Comic Relief co-founder, Lenny Henry completed his degree in English Literature using a distance learning course. These days he is often spotted in the British Library, an underrated celebrity hangout if you ask us.

Marcia Cross – Our favourite Wisteria Lane resident, Marcia is best known for playing Bree in the long-running Desperate Housewives series. Proving that the film set is perhaps the best place to learn, Marcia used an online course to complete certain units and credits for her master’s degree in Psychology.

If you are as inspired as we are by these famous faces, why not log in and start learning with an online course? Who knows where you might end up...
