This course is run by William Stanwix of Hemp-Lime Construct. If you're planning a new home, extension, garden structure or refurbishment, hemp building offers a low-impact, zero-carbon alternative to conventional construction and you can do it yourself! Hemp building in a nutshell is mixing chopped hemp stems (a waste product from the rope and textile industries) with a lime-based binder and water, then casting it around a timber frame providing an extremely warm, airtight and breathable building system. This course is for you if you're planning a new structure or alterations to an existing structure. It aims to provide you with the practical experience and confidence to attempt the build yourself but is equally of use to those of you who are thinking of employing a builder who may not be familiar with hemp building or if you're just interested in learning more about hemp building. The course covers: •introduction to hemp building •applications of hemp building •sourcing materials •compatible foundations, floors, openings, roofs and finishes •typical construction details •practical issues including constructing the timber frame and shuttering and mixing the hemp and lime •building control issues Practical work: •constructing a timber frame and form work •mixing the hemp, lime binder and water •casting the mixed hemp lime binder and water •analysing a previously cast wall
