Course Description
Apart from Rubens, Antony van Dyck was the greatest Flemish painter of the 17th Century. The course will follow van Dyck's career throughout Europe and later in Britain and reveal the Flemish artist's unique impact on British cultural life, from the reign of Charles I onwards. We will study some of the finest and most magnificent paintings that van Dyck produced during his years in Britain and his continuing visual legacy through portraits by artists from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries, including Sir Joshua Reynolds and John Singer Sargent.
