Course Description
As well as specialisations in the fields of Classical Archaeology, European Archaeology and Archaeological Science, Oxford boasts a long tradition of archaeological research in other parts of the world. Making full use of the opportunities for study and research provided by the Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums and their respective libraries, as well as of the University's other archaeological resources, the taught courses in World Archaeology allow graduate students to develop their interests in areas of the world beyond Europe and further back in time than the development of farming. Major areas of regional expertise lie in sub-Saharan Africa, Australasia, Palaeolithic Europe and the Islamic world. Additionally, staff members have interests in, and can provide teaching that covers, the archaeology of colonialism, archaeological method and theory and hunter-gatherer archaeology. World Archaeology is available over one year (leading to a M St degree) and two years (leading to a M Phil degree). Both courses are of value in themselves and both provide a suitable platform for further research at doctoral level, whether at Oxford or elsewhere. As with the other Masters degrees in Archaeology, the hallmark of World Archaeology is its flexibility, allowing students to select those options most suitable for them as individuals.

Assessment method
During the first year of their M Phil students follow the same course of study and examination as those taking the MSt. degree in World Archaeology. Their choices of subject and mode of examination are exactly the same, except that the dissertation option is not available. During their second year M.Phil. students specialise further by selecting one subject for further examination and by writing a dissertation. The subject, chosen from those listed for the M.St., is normally examined by a pair of 5,000-word pre-set essays. The 25,000-word dissertation, which is an extensive piece of original research, is on a topic of the candidate's own choice (approved by the supervisor). It will normally be on a topic related to the examined subject. Both the dissertation and, where appropriate, the pre-set essays must be completed and handed in before the end of the sixth term. Candidates may also sometimes have an oral examination.
