Course Description
The Water and Wastewater Technology MSc course provides students with an understanding of the science, engineering and management that underpin water and wastewater treatment. Accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), this course focuses on process technology solutions for the prevention of pollution of the water environment in relation to the treatment and minimisation of wastewaters, removal of contaminants from drinking water, and the production of ultra-pure water for high technology industries. The MSc course comprises eight assessed modules, two industrial group design projects and an individual thesis project which promotes problem solving. For part-time students there is tailored progression between modules. A single design project is undertaken and replaces the two group design projects. This is usually work-based. Students are able to tailor the technology - engineering management emphasis of the course to meet their particular interests and career aspirations. Students complete two mandatory foundation modules and three mandatory technical modules. The remaining three modules are selected from available technical, management and engineering modules in consultation with the Course Director. Foundation modules (two mandatory): Process Science and Engineering; Water and Wastewater Treatment Principles. Technical modules (select between three and four): Physical Processes (mandatory); Chemical Processes (mandatory); Biological Processes (mandatory); Desalination. Management modules (select between one and two): Conservation and Re-Use; Project, Finance and Contract Management; Risk Management and Reliability Engineering. Engineering modules (select up to two): Engineering Hydraulics; Pumps and Pumping Systems.
