This course enables students from either a science or a social science background to study both water resources management and water law; it is available in flexible mode, involving some distance learning study as well as attendance on campus; the programme begins with modules in water resources, which once completed students are entitled to a PG Cert in Water Resources Management; this part of the programme is by distance learning and builds on a graduate Diploma run through the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) through its regional centres; the University is a regional centre for this purpose; students then take a distance learning module in transferable skills for water law, which enables non-law students to work in a different discipline whilst extending the research skills of those with a law background; it also includes study material in the 3 core areas of water law, in preparation for the summer programme in Dundee, where students take modules in each of these core areas of water law: international water law; comparative national water law; regulation of water services; these run in a 10 week consecutive programme, with an orientation week followed by three 3 week teaching blocks; they are joined on the summer programme by students from a combined suite of Masters degrees, along with students from the sister Centre in the University (the Centre for Petroleum Mineral and Energy Law and Policy) and external attendees taking the modules as professional development.
The programme begins with 3 distance learning modules in water resources management, and then a distance learning module in transferable skills for water law; students then attend a summer school in Dundee, and take the 3 water law modules: international water law; comparative national water law; the regulation of water services; part-time students may do this over 2 or 3 summers to suit their own schedules.
