Wakefield College - A College to be Proud of

Wakefield College has provided education and training in the Wakefield District since 1868, and today is home to some 10,000 part-time and 3,000 full-time students.

A broad ranging portfolio of courses, from pre-entry level through to higher education and professional qualifications, is on offer to students of all ages and abilities. Our Services to Business unit provides high quality customised training to businesses, and our well respected Centres of Vocational Excellence in Management and Information Communication Technology are innovative and successful.

The College plays a leading role in regional regeneration and a new state of the art learning facility - the skillsXchange - is now open at Castleford, replacing the College’s Whitwood Campus and offering skills for employability locally and regionally. Redevelopment of the Wakefield Campus is also underway and will bring a modern, vibrant learning environment, home to Sixth Form and Higher Education students, into the heart of the City.

In the Ofsted Inspection Report published in June 2010, the College was described as a place where learners enjoy their classes, participate well in both individual and group activities and make good progress in their studies. The Inspectors particularly praised the College’s actions to make sure learners feel safe while at College and its promotion of equality and diversity, giving these areas, together with the College’s ICT provision, the top grade of “outstanding”.

Among the other highlighted strengths were the excellent use of information and learning technology made by staff to enhance teaching and learning; the range and quality of the College’s courses; the personal support offered to learners (with the specialist support given to learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities being singled out for particular praise); and the way the College prepares students for employment or progression to higher education. Out of the 23 areas which were assessed, Ofsted gave Wakefield College the grade of “Good” or “Outstanding” for 22 of them.

The College has also emerged top of the West Yorkshire Schools and Colleges’ league table of Achievement and Attainment for the third year in succession, reflecting the achievement in 2006 of its best ever A level results, which were described by the Minister of Further and Higher Education Bill Rammell as ‘phenomenal’.

HND in Music Performance

'The transition from being out of the classroom for two years was actually quite smooth and not too daunting on the HND in Music Performance. The courses were all so mixed –we also had the opportunity to take part in external performances, which gave us lots of experience.

The tutors were so approachable and helpful. Being in smaller classes, I had the chance to sit down with the tutor where he would help me improve on a one to one basis. The support was always there. I am now at university as a result of the tutors giving me such self belief that I could do anything. I plan to finish my degree, where I mi ght then continue learning with a master's and I will continue to play with the band Chichino.

My advice to anyone thinking about furthering their education would be to go along to the Taster Days that Wakefield put on to get a feel for the course, facilities and the College as a whole. Also get to know your tutors as they are 98 per cent of the course and never say no to anything – be open and try everything, which is also a great way to learn!'
