Course Description
This course takes its title from the field of study emerging from recent and continuing changes in the disciplines of Film Studies, Cultural Studies and the History of Art & Design, and includes the study of the relationships between theory and practice. The word visual implies a focus on the importance of seeing and the history of perception. The study of visual culture interrogates ways of seeing and how they inform and structure our understandings of the world. The course offers historical and contemporary views of visual culture from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives and encourages both traditional and innovative approaches. Taught elements engage with the histories of film, media, art and design. Positive use is made of museums, galleries and archives in the locality such as the North West Film Archive, Museum of Science and Industry, Platt Fields Costume Museum; the Museum of Labour History; the City Art Gallery and the Imperial War Museum North. The involvement often takes the form of live projects. The course emphasises and provides the skills for primary research, the selection and organisation of material, textual analysis, critical evaluation and oral and written presentation. Student's work towards a taught postgraduate qualification which is defined through a Learning Agreement.
