Course Description
The MA in Urban and Metropolitan History provides an opportunity to study cities and urban communities in comparative perspective, focusing on the history of London and English cities from the middle ages to the present day. Students are introduced to key historical approaches, sources and methods and learn to apply them to the study of interconnected themes in metropolitan and urban history. The course is interdisciplinary, and importance is placed on the use of architecture, material culture, archaeology and literature as important sources for the study of localities. Field trips and museum visits form a key part of the course. The MA will appeal to anyone wishing to develop a broad range of transferable historical skills and those with interests in the history of localities, the comparative study of cities and regions, historic buildings and the historic environment. It also prepares students for future PhD research. The MA is taught by staff at two research centres, the Centre for Metropolitan History and the Centre for Local History/Victoria County History. Both are based within the Institute of Historical Research (IHR) and School of Advanced Study in the University of London, where students can draw on expertise in urban and metropolitan history as well as unrivalled library and other resources for the study of the history of London and of other cities. Students join a community of students, researchers and teachers at the IHR and take full advantage of the facilities and resources of the central University, as well as the nearby British Library, the Museum of London and other important national centres.

Course Fees

Entry Requirements
The normal minimum entrance requirement is a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree from a university in the United Kingdom, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Applications may also be considered from candidates who do not meet the formal academic requirements, but who offer alternative qualifications or who have considerable work experience in a relevant field. UK applicants are normally asked to attend for interview at the Institute. Overseas applicants may be asked to submit a piece of written work in English, on a relevant historical subject, in lieu of an interview. Competence in English: Students whose first language is not English must be able to demonstrate competence in English, both written and spoken, to an appropriate level to carry out their studies. The Institute of Historical Research requires one of the following: either a minimum overall score of 7.0, and no less than 6.0 in each category (academic reading, academic writing, listening and speaking), in the English Language Testing Service test administered by the British Council or a TOEFL score of at least 610 in the paper-based test plus 5 in the test of written English, or a score of 253 in the computer-based test plus an essay rating of 5 or a Grade C or above in the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English or a Grade A in the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English. Other qualifications or proof of competence may be accepted. A degree at a UK university by an overseas student is not accepted as automatic evidence of adequate competence in English. Students from an overseas background are required to submit a piece of written work (e.g. an essay from their undergraduate degree) with their application.
