Course Description
This programme has been designed to cater for the growing demand for courses that explore the potential contribution to the design process of an advanced theoretical input. As is evident in the work of several contemporary avant-garde architects, theoretical debates may often provide powerful design tools in the studio. This programme draws upon knowledge from other disciplines and engages with a variety of cultural debates. In so doing, it attempts to introduce into the design process a range of critical techniques from outside the traditional domain of architecture, and to explore and develop innovative design methodologies. The Urban Design programme is intended as an international programme, concerned as much with ideas of sustainability in the developing world city as it is with the regeneration of the European city. The multi-disciplinary nature of this course gives students a thorough understanding of the professional interrelationship between architecture and town planning. This programme also provides students with a broader understanding of the many contexts within which they will design than traditional courses. Importantly, the proposed urban design programme enables graduates with non-design backgrounds to work with design professionals in shaping the built environment.
